FAQs

Our FAQ’s are always changing. If you have something you’d like to ask, feel free to email us and we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Am I good candidate for a home birth?
The fact that you are seeking further care options for your pregnancy shows that you may be a great candidate for a home birth. We offer a free consultation to learn more about you personally and gather further information on birth and home birth specifically. We would love to meet you help you on your pregnancy journey.
Do you accept insurance?
Many insurance companies will pay out-of-hospital midwives as an out-of-network provider. We would be happy to check with your insurance company to see what type of coverage you will have.
How long have you been practicing midwifery?
I am in my fifth year of practice with over 250 births.
What if there is a problem during labor or birth?
If there is a problem during labor or birth that requires medical attention we will transfer to the hospital. We should note that the majority of transfers are not emergencies. We will transfer if the hospital would better suit your need for monitoring or care better than a home environment. We will ride to the hospital together and stay with you until the problem is resolved and you are resting happily with your baby. Post natal care and breastfeeding support will continue as normal.
What is your transfer rate?
Young beginnings had 0 transfers for 2014!
What about the mess?
We have adapted our birth kit in such a way to create as little mess as possible. We take great care to cover all surfaces near the birthing mother with protective coverings. Once mother is resting, the birth team will gather all the coverings and clean any mess that may have occurred during labor or delivery (which is extremely rare). We will wash all garments and towels before leaving and throw the trash away in your outdoor dumpster.
What about the birth certificate and social security number?
The midwife will complete a Certificate of Live Birth form and submit it to the state within 10 days of birth. After submission, a social security card will be issued. If you choose, you can apply for an official copy of the birth certificate via the Kansas Vital Statistics website.
Can other children be present at my birth?
Yes! Though, if younger children are present, we ask that another adult be present whose sole responsibility is their care during your labor and birth or in the event off a transfer.
Can you do stitches?
Absolutely. Ginger has been trained in perineal repair and will bring everything necessary, should it be required.
What if I go into labor at the same time as another mother?
I limit the number of clients I take every month to avoid this very thing happening. In the unlikely event that you and another mother go into birth at the same time, my assistant and a trusted and experienced midwife (who partners with us for such an occasion) will arrive to assist you in labor until I arrive.
Do you offer VBAC’s?
When considering a VBAC or a home birth after cesarean (HBAC) it is important to do your research and make sure it is the right decision for you. A decision to have an HBAC is a big one and should be treated as such. That being said, if you feel confident in your ability (emotionally and physically) to give birth vaginally, we are happy to support you in that decision. With proper support and education we believe that you can have a successful HBAC!
