Your Journey Through Pregnancy

13 weeks – Full Term

Your second and third trimesters are often accompanied with an increase of energy and sense of happiness and well being. We are excited to join you in your journey while you prepare your body for birth and motherhood and enjoy watching your beautiful baby bump grow.

Our appointment scheduling generally goes as follows:

12-28 weeks – Appointments every 4-5 weeks

28-36 weeks – Appointments every 2 weeks

36 weeks to Delivery – Appointments are weekly

Prenatal Visits

When you come for your first prenatal visit, you will be welcomed into a comfortable and quiet home environment far removed from the hustle and bustle of a busy office. We schedule your appointments to cater to you and structure them in a way that you will not be rushed and any questions or concerns you may have can be discussed.

Children are always welcome to play with the toys that are available in the prenatal room or to lay with you while we listen to the baby’s heartbeat. These are great moments for your family to share with you.

If you are a working or busy momma who needs to be in and out quickly, we are able to facilitate that as well!

What to expect at your appointment:
  • We will discuss your pregnancy and answer any questions you may have
  • Emotional and physical well being
  • Review your diet and exercise regimens
  • We will take your weight and blood pressure
  • Measure your tummy and listen to baby’s heartbeat

Lab Work – an initial OB panel gives us general information about your health and may highlight any problems you may have during your pregnancy. This blood panel is taken during your prenatal and sent off to a lab for analysis.

Sonograms – Though we do not routinely recommend the use of sonograms during pregnancy, though if you are needing a diagnostic or are interested in learning the gender of your baby we have options available for you.

Group B Strep – Group B Strep (GBS) is a type of bacterial infection that can be found in 25% of pregnant women. GBS grown in the rectum and can migrate to the vagina creating a number of risk factors such as an increase in urinary tract infections, and premature rupture of membranes that can lead to an infection of the membranes surrounding the baby.

GBS is responsible for infecting 1 in every 2,000 babies born in the United States with symptoms showing 1-6 days after birth. Symptoms include fever, lethargic baby, disinterest or refusal to nurse, and high pitched crying.

Testing can performed at your 36 week appointment to determine whether you are positive or negative for the bacteria. Although we offer treatment options, our primary goal is prevention. By choosing to modify diet and adding a few simple home remedies to your daily routine, you can greatly decrease your risk of infection.

Your Diet

So many potential risks in pregnancy, from pre eclampsia to gestational diabetes, can be avoided by simply eating a healthy diet. It may seem difficult and overwhelming but there is no better time to start than right now.  Very simple changes can be made in your diet to sustain a happy and healthy pregnancy!

  1. Eat your protein! Lean meats like chicken and turkey are great, budget friendly choices for     your diet. Greek yogurt, eggs and almonds are also great protein rich foods for pregnant women.
  2. Cut out the processed foods. “Food” created in factories or modified in labs is not real food and is actually harming your body not nourishing it.  Shop the perimeter or your grocery store. If it can last months or years on a shelf, you shouldn’t be eating it.
  3. Nix the soda and the juice and hydrate yourself with water. Break up the monotony by adding some probiotic rich kombucha or flavored seltzer waters to the mix.
  4. Eat your veggies and fruits! These nutrient dense foods can be puréed into healthy sauces and desserts, mixed into smoothies or eaten raw with your favorite yogurt dips. Try to make a space for them on your plate at every meal.

Mother Blessing Ceremonies

Inspired from the Navajo people’s ceremony of celebration of a woman’s passage into motherhood, a Blessingway or Mother Blessing, is a unique and beautiful way to celebrate the nearing end of the mothers pregnancy journey and her passage into motherhood. While you may have many offers from friends and family to celebrate your new baby by showering him or her with gifts, a Mothers Blessing is a beautiful way to honor a mother, spend time with her and shower her with affirmations and love.

A Mothers Blessing allows the mother to be surrounded by her most trusted friends and family; people who will help her to feel safe and loved during her blessing. The women share birth stories, encouraging words, pray for the mother and enjoy nourishing foods together.

Each Blessing is unique but popular options include, henna for the mother and attendees, writing birth affirmations for the mother, making a beaded birth necklace, massage and making a strength candle for the mother.

We would love to host your Mothers Blessing and share this part of your journey with you!
